Il ministro degli Esteri Marc Garneau afferma di aver detto ai suoi omologhi israeliani che gli sgomberi, le demolizioni e la costruzione di insediamenti a Gerusalemme Est dovrebbero cessare per allentare le tensioni e prevenire un’altra ondata di violenza nella regione.
Parlando con i giornalisti alla fine di un tour di cinque giorni in Medio Oriente, Garneau afferma che il Canada sostiene una soluzione a due stati per porre fine al lungo conflitto israelo-palestinese.
Ma dice che ci sono questioni più urgenti a breve termine, tra cui evitare ulteriori riacutizzazioni dopo che un fragile cessate il fuoco ha posto fine all’ultimo round di combattimenti tra Israele e il gruppo militante palestinese Hamas a maggio.
Garneau afferma che anche ricevere aiuti umanitari nella Striscia di Gaza è una priorità dopo la guerra di 11 giorni che ha visto la morte di 230 persone nell’enclave gestita da Hamas e la distruzione di numerose case e altre infrastrutture.
