Il vicepresidente degli Stati Uniti Kamala Harris è arrivato a Seoul per un viaggio progettato per sottolineare l’impegno degli Stati Uniti nei confronti della Corea del Sud mentre Pyongyang ha continuato un blitz senza precedenti di test sulle armi con il lancio di due missili balistici.
Poco dopo essere atterrato dal Giappone giovedì mattina, Harris ha incontrato il presidente sudcoreano Yoon Suk-yeol nel suo ufficio a Seoul e ha elogiato l’alleanza tra i paesi come un “fulcro della sicurezza e della prosperità”.
Yoon, una conservatrice entrata in carica a maggio, ha definito la sua visita “un altro punto di svolta” per rafforzare i legami.
Harris visiterà la zona demilitarizzata pesantemente fortificata (DMZ), che esiste da quando la guerra di Corea del 1950-53 si è conclusa con un armistizio piuttosto che con un trattato di pace, nel corso della giornata.
“È quasi nella ‘lista delle cose da fare’ di qualsiasi vicepresidente o presidente che visita questa parte del mondo, per visitare la DMZ”, ha affermato Rob McBride di Al Jazeera, che si trova a Paju, in Corea del Sud, vicino al confine.
Il presidente degli Stati Uniti Joe Biden ha visitato l’area quando era vicepresidente nel 2013, mentre l’ex presidente Donald Trump vi si è recato nel 2019, facendo notizia stringendo la mano al leader nordcoreano Kim Jong Un ed entrando in Corea del Nord.
