TEL AVIV — During a Monday interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak addressed the mounting pressure on Israel to substantiate its claim that Hamas utilizes Al-Shifa Hospital as a command center. Barak revealed to CNN that Israel had constructed a significant bunker beneath Al-Shifa Hospital in the 1980s, a fact already known for many years since the Israeli military governed Gaza at that time.

Barak corroborated these reports, emphasizing that the shelters were built decades ago to expand the hospital’s operations within the extremely confined space of the complex, as he described it.

In 2009, Haaretz reported that the Israeli civil administration in the territories constructed the hospital complex’s Building Number 2, which has a large cement basement that housed the hospital’s laundry and various administrative services.

On November 14, Israeli Occupation Forces stormed the main buildings of Al-Shifa Hospital, including the emergency department, specialized surgeries department, and the maternity ward, as reported by Al Jazeera. According to the report, the Israeli military claimed that Al-Shifa is being used by Hamas’s leadership.

In response, Ashraf Al-Qudra, the spokesman for the Ministry of Health in Gaza, stated, “There are only doctors, patients, and displaced people” inside Al-Shifa, emphasizing “We have nothing to be afraid of hiding.”
