After 104 days without food, Maher al Akhras has broken his hunger strike on the promise that he will be released November 26. In this video, he is fed by his young daughter, who was refused access to her father only days ago.
Maher’s story is important for so many reasons—he has not only brought international attention to the horrors of Israeli administrative detention, whereby Palestinians can be held indefinitely without even the ability to see the evidence of the accusations leveled against them or any kind of conviction. Maher has also shown us the importance and strategy of self-sacrifice, forcing Israeli authorities into taking his case seriously and answering publicly for their lack of cause to hold him.
Maher should not have had to suffer so terribly for his freedom—and the thousands of others like him, including hundreds of minors, should not be subjected to potentially endless detentions decided by those who have no interest in their freedom. Through his commitment to action, Maher shows us the blueprint for the abolition of this practice and, ultimately, the path to decolonization. It is only through sacrifice and determination, as well as collective international action, that we will win justice.
