MIAMI—Hurricane Dorian slogged toward the Bahamas and Florida on Saturday as a fierce Category 4 storm and threatened a widening stretch of the southeastern U.S.

The storm was expected to pass near or over the northwestern Bahamas starting early Sunday, and officials warned residents to prepare for the devastating effect of 150 mile-an-hour winds and intense storm surges.
